Blessing of the Fleet - June 1, 2002
The
Blessing of the Fleet was held at Marina Park in Thunder Bay on June 1. This was
the first event of this nature in recent memory. The Mission’s goals were to
bless people and their vessels, build community among the marine community and
make the marine community better known in Thunder Bay. We believed that by
making a positive contribution to the marine community, the Mission to Seafarers
would have its name and mission known better.
The Rev’d Ed Swayze, chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers, and the Rev’d Rob Taggart, representing the Thunder Bay Council of Clergy, officiated and Terry Scott was the master of ceremonies. The mayor, Ken Boshcoff and the Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North, Michael Gravelle, spoke, bringing their greetings.
The
Canadian Coast Guard Ship Cape Lambton made its first public appearance in the
Blessing of the Fleet. The Tug Glenada, the OPP Police boat, Loon Magic (Coast
Guard Auxiliary), 2 boats from HMCS GRIFFON, 1 boat from Lake Superior Sail
Centre, 8 sailing vessels 1 power boat and 1 kayak took part. The PIONEER II,
joined late because of mechanical problems. 150 spectators at Pier 3
participated on shore.
